Devin Poe

Devin Poe is a doctoral candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he studies the delivery process of utility-scale solar developments in Virginia. His research focuses on Virginia’s renewable energy transition and growing electricity demand, examining how utility-scale solar can help the state achieve its clean energy goals through improved project organization, siting and permitting, engineering strategies, and coordination throughout the development process. His work also explores how these goals can be achieved while considering the perspectives of local communities and residents to support more sustainable and effective project development.
As a Fellow with SI2, Devin is focused on supporting the Solar Uncommon Dialogue, agrivoltaic research, and community engagement innovations.
Before beginning his doctoral studies, Devin worked as an engineering intern at Kimley-Horn, supporting utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects. He is currently leading a research project on social and regulatory barriers for utility-scale solar in Virginia. As part of this research, he is conducting qualitative interviews and analysis to identify opportunities to streamline the utility-scale solar development process, helping Virginia meet its growing energy needs in a more sustainable and community-conscious manner.
Devin received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Civil and Environmental engineering from Virginia Tech. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, training for running races, and is working toward completing his first triathlon.
